The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum is hosting the Opening Ceremonies for the Inuit Art Society's Annual Conference.

A Welcome drum dance and song will be preformed by Inkuk Performer and Photographer, Jennie Williams.

Jennie Williams is an lnuk photographer, filmmaker, and performer from Nunatsiavut, NL, Canada. She creates dramatic black and white images of everyday life, with an eye for how diverse groups adapt Inuit traditions to contemporary life. Jennie is part of the Arctic Museum's photography exhibit; Iñuit Qiñiġaaŋi: Contemporary Inuit Photography

Keynote speaker will be Nelson Graburn, Professor Emeritus, Anthropology, UC Berkeley. Nelson Graburn’s keynote address is titled: From Tartuk – the darkness (of the North) to Qaumajuk – the light (of the Winnipeg Art Gallery): Transformation in Canadian Inuit Arts.

Nelson Graburn taught at UC Berkeley for 57 years, serving as Curator of the Hearst Museum and Chair of Canadian Studies and co-chair of Tourism Studies. He has carried out research on change, identity, multiculturalism, museums, art, heritage and tourism among Canadian Inuit since 1959.
