The Bowdoin College Department of History will present Jeffrey Boutwell speaking on "Boutwell: Radical Republican and Champion of Democracy." George S. Boutwell of Massachusetts was a key figure in American public life for seven decades. As the youngest-ever governor of Massachusetts in the early 1850s, he helped create the Radical Republican Party and became a close ally and friend of presidents Lincoln and Grant during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras.
