About this Event
Please join Prof. Zahir Janmohamed (Creative Writing) & Paige Milligan (MENA) as they facilitate a group discussion of Palestinian writer Adania Shibli's short novel, Minor Detail. Last fall, the Frankfurt Book Fair drew condemnation when it cancelled its plans to honor Shibli for this novel. Shibli's novel (105 pages, translated by Elisabeth Jaquette) tackles themes of erasure, dispossession, memory, and trauma. Set within the two settings of the Naqab/"Negev" desert in 1949 (a year after the Palestinian Nakba) and the post-Oslo occupied West Bank in the 2000s. In this novel, Shibli explores the rediscovery of past trauma, by characters still experiencing daily trauma in the present.
With the goal of using literature as an entry point to greater understanding of our world and of others, we invite everyone interested to read and join us in discussion!
