Harriet Beecher Stowe Shocks the World and Puts an End to her Literary Career
Tuesday, April 14th, noon-1:230 pm

Lord Byron, the poet, was a sensation during Harriet’s lifetime. “Byron Fever” reigned. College men strode around campus, collars wide open and long hair flowing beyond their shoulders in imitation. Women and girls swooned, imagining themselves the objects of his poetry. Despite his extremely controversial lifestyle, it seemed that Byron – the Romantic-- could do nothing wrong in the eyes of his adoring public. That is, until his wife left him and shared her side of the story with the world. As a friend of Lady Byron, Harriet knew the real facts. When no one amongst her friends, the public or the press came to Lady Byron’s rescue to save her reputation from the lies of her husband, Harriet felt it her moral duty to share her friend’s truth with the world – to her own ultimate literary peril.
